Reborning a doll is a long and strenuous process that takes countless hours of hard work and skill. One of the most important steps in the reborning process is painting, as it lays down the foundation for what your doll will look like. If you fail to paint your reborn properly or don't use the right type of paint, your doll simply won't come out looking like a high-quality reborn.

What To Look For In Reborn Doll Paint

It should go without saying that you'll need to think long and hard about what color of paint you want to use on your reborn doll. The problem that a lot of beginners run into is not knowing what the paint will look like once it's used on their doll. This is something that comes with experience and trial and error. Once you find a color combination you like for your dolls, stick with it; however, you shouldn't be afraid to experiment using other colors as well.
Don't make the assumption that you'll only need one type of paint to color your reborn. In order to create a fully realistic appearance, you'll need to use a couple different shades. The trick to successfully using multiple colors is to choose colors that are just a slightly shade darker or lighter than the others. After applying one of the colors, you can then gently apply the next to create an almost 3D effect that's unmatched compared to traditional play dolls.
Although there are many different types of paint available to use on reborn dolls, one of the most popular is Genesis. This stuff is designed specifically for use on reborns and as such, it contains a complex mixture of minerals used to create the most realistic effect on a doll. All Genesis paints are odorless and non-solvent based, making them the perfect choice for reborn dolls.
Tips on Using Reborn Doll Paint
If this is your first time painting a reborn doll, you'll need to first strip the base paint off of a vinyl doll. Essentially, this is one of the first steps in reborning a doll and shouldn't be overlooked. There are a couple different ways to accomplish this, and although we'll go deeper into the exact steps necessary to remove base doll paint later, one of the most basic ways is to use a product called "Goof Off." This stuff is great at removing paint, gum, stains and just about anything else you can think of. Be sure to only use Goof Off or any other type of harsh chemicals in a well-ventilated areas where you won't inhale the fumes.
Something else that's important to remember when painting a reborn doll is that you'll need to apply several coats of paint. A lot of beginners fail to realize this and instead of their doll turning out vibrantly colored, it looks more like a traditional toy doll, which is something no one wants to see happen. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to tell just how many coats of paint a reborn doll will need, as it varies depending on a number of different factors. Typically, though, you can expect to add around 12-20 coats of paint for a high-quality reborn doll.
