What Are OOAK Reborn Dolls?

Some collectors and artists are under the impression that OOAK refers to a specific brand of reborn dolls. In reality, though, OOAK is an acronym meaning “one-of-a-kind.” Therefore, a OOAK reborn doll is simply a doll with unique features that doesn’t resemble any other doll. If the doll possesses a similar body, facial expression or any other feature that’s commonly found in other reborns, it cannot be given the OOAK label, which is the primary reason why collectors seek to own them. Most big-name manufacturers avoid placing such labels on their reborns simply because they manufacture the same type of doll multiple times. Instead, it’s the independent artists who make and sell OOAK reborn dolls.

According to Wikipedia.com, the term OOAK originated out the sport of yacht racing during the late 1940s. Back then, official rules for the regetta races stated that no two ships racing against each other could be the same type or model. If you wished to race your yacht in the race, it had to be one-of-a-kind or OOAK for short. Over the years, the term began to die out but saw a newfound revival during the 90s when individuals used it to describe items they were selling online. These items were typically handmade items, such as birdhouses, crochet clothes, paintings and of course dolls. When the reborn doll craze struck, artists began using the term to label dolls that were made to be unique and unlike any other.

It’s important to note that there’s no industry-standard for what defines a OOAK reborn doll. If an artist believes he or she has successfully made a doll that’s unlike any other, they can label it as OOAK in hopes that a potential buyer will seek it out. With that said, nearly all of the OOAK reborn dolls you’ll find available for sale are simply stunning and beautiful to look at. When making a OOAK reborn doll, artists seem to place a great deal of emphasis on detail and features, which in turn leads to one of the highest-quality, most realistic reborns you’ve ever seen.

OOAK Reborn Doll Buying Tips

When shopping for a OOAK reborn doll, you should generally follow the same rules as you would any other reborn doll. First and foremost, this means deciding whether you want a male or female reborn doll. We’ve talked about this in previous articles, and there’s really no wrong choice. Remember, though, the gender of your OOAK reborn doll will affect what the type and style of clothes you dress them in. As you can expect, boy dolls are more suited towards blue colors, while girls are usually dressed in pinks.

Something else that you should consider when buying a OOAK reborn doll is their facial expression. Most skilled artists place great care in creating a realistic expression that actually exhibits emotion. This is especially true for OOAK reborn dolls, as they must have an expression unlike any other doll. Take your time to shop through all of the OOAK reborns until you find one with an expression that just blows you away. The bottom line is that you shouldn’t settle for a OOAK reborn with an expression that you aren’t completely in love with.

To make the buying process easier, we’ve compiled a list of things to consider when shopping for a OOAK reborn doll:

  • Since reborn dolls aren’t mass manufactured by big-name companies, you’ll want to do a little digging and find out who exactly made the doll. Most reputable doll artists will brand their name on every OOAK reborn they make, so it shouldn’t be difficult for you to find out.
  • Think long and hard whether you want to own a boy or girl OOAK reborn doll. While both of them make wonderful collectibles, gender plays a huge role in how you dress and accessorize them.
  • As with any reborn doll, you’ll want to see what accessories and clothes the OOAK reborn comes with. Thankfully, most artists give away some pretty nice outfits along with their OOAK dolls, which is yet another reason to purchase them over other types.
  • Check and see what materials were made in the construction of any OOAK you are thinking about buying. If it’s made by an inexperienced doll artist who used the wrong materials, it probably won’t last as long. If you can’t find this information, read feedback from previous buyers to get an idea of the doll’s overall quality.
