History of Berenguer Reborn Dolls
While Berenguer reborn dolls are one of the most popular and sought after types available on the market, few people know their true history. The company's legacy began in 1944 with a Spanish sculptor and doll artist named Jose Berenguer. Instead of following in the footsteps of past doll-makers, Jose Berenguer decided to place an emphasis on lifelike features and realism, creating true works of art rather than typical toy dolls. This is something that no previous doll makers had ever attempted; therefore, Jose was traveling in uncharted territory so to speak. Thankfully, his instincts were right and people of all ages and background were eager to purchase his unique dolls.
Originally, dolls produced by the Berenguer family were named Berjusa dolls. It wasn't until the 90s when the company renamed their dolls to reflect the family name.
The dolls produced by Jose Berenguer were an instant success not only his home country of Spain, but throughout the rest of the world as well. Americans were even traveling thousands of miles to purchase these fresh, unique dolls with lifelike features. Word began to spread about Berenguer dolls and the company soon became a household name recognized for their realistic works of art.
Passing The Buck To Salvador
In the mid 60s, Jose Berenguer passed his doll-making business down to his son Salvador, who continued to make the same realistic, lifelike dolls as his father. As the popularity for Berenguer dolls grew, so did the Berenguer family's business. In an effort to make their dolls even more realistic, Salvador began implanting mohair into the scalp of his reborns. This soft and shiny hair from the Angora goat was the perfect textile to use in reborns due to its natural sheen and glimmer. Still to this day, mohair is arguably the single most popular material to use for hair in reborn dolls.
Another change made by the Berenguer family was a shift from traditional plastic to vinyl components. Not only was this lighter and easier to work with, but vinyl also gave a more lifelike appearance, which is the ultimate goal with reborn dolls. Of course it wasn't until the early 90s when the term "reborn doll" was actually coined. While no one knows who the first person to use the term was, it's believed that the Berenguer family played a huge role in starting the reborn hobby. Their works of art were some of the first examples of dolls designed to look like actual living babies, and once people got their hands on them, the craze quickly spread until the hobby of reborning was developed.
